“Matters of the Heart”

A poem by Agnes Elizabeth Owens

Perhaps we hold on a little too long to someone who doesn’t

deserve us,

We know that the heart is an indelible godsend.

But it’s our mind that makes the unnecessary fuss.

Our hearts are special, they should be cherished and not broken.

The heart is able to exude a lot of love and kindness.

But not big enough to handle people deciding to love when

convenient.

Learned it is better in prayer to have a heart without words than

words without a heart – selfless,

Learned everything done with a good heart and expect nothing

in return; there would be no disappointment.

Matters of the heart make life worth living and the world sublime,

Sometimes the mind tricks the body into believing, but the heart

truly feels it,

Matters of the heart confuse being courageous or crazy; we must

sometimes be both at any time,

The best and most beautiful things in this world cannot be seen

or touched, but just felt in the heart, so fit.

Pride says, “It’s impossible.”

Experience says, “It’s risky.”

Reason says, “It’s pointless.”

But the heart whispered, “Give it a try.”
